Biographie

“All I wanted to do when I left school, after the first 18 years of my life, was to get out of this “hole” and go and visit the rest of the world!” says Lesley Jayne of the village on the Isle of Wight where she was born. “This hole,” she admits willingly, has become her paradise on Earth, to which she flees as often as possible to go back to her roots and recharge her batteries with the strong sea air and her favourite walks on the beaches and cliffs.

This visit of the world took her first to Paris, France, which she had fallen in love with on a school vacation course.  “It’s like being plugged into an electric current!” she says. It was in St. Tropez that she met with a band and stood up and sang before an audience for the first time – apart from a school concert or in the church choir! And there she met Gérard Blanc, the singer of a Parisian group, The Windings, and a long relationship began.

Still with itchy feet, she visited Rome, Milan, Zurich, Klosters, Geneva, London and Brussels and played the guitar and sang with South American, French, Italian and Greek musicians. On her return to Paris, with her guitar, a pad on the Ile St Louis and a little help from her friends, she started taking singing and drama lessons, recorded a song with the group Harmony Five for the Eurovision song contest selection, then a first solo disc called “Starway.”

Then with Gérard Blanc – with whom she stayed for the next 21 years and had a daughter – who became the singer of the French band Martin Circus and with Sylvain Pauchard, a recording opportunity came up with a song made-to-measure called “Rocking With My Radio,” and its rootsy, nostalgic B-side, “My Isle of Wight.”

This single went to the top of the charts, selling over 400 000 copies in France alone, and remained No.1 for 12 weeks on national radios Europe 1 Top 50, RMC and RTL, and was a fantastic success in the disco venues all over France and with the explosively emerging FM band radio stations. It was also number one in Italy for over a month, and enjoyed international success from California to Tokyo via Canada, Spain, Germany, South America, Belgium... Only the UK didn’t work for Lesley Jayne – the song came out in the British Isles as a Samantha Fox single!  Lesley’s second single, “Sailing Away” was also an inspiring success in the top 10 of the disco venue hits.

Lesley then recorded an album in January 1982 on which she wrote the lyrics of eight of the ten songs, and for which Mondino did the superb outside-inside cover portrait photography. She received the President Black & Gold Trophy and the New Singer of the Year prizes in 1983 and made a third single, “Hot Promises.” A career which continued with the D.J.’s all through the 80’s…

She had a parallel career as a songwriter for recording artists including Patrick Hernandez, Princess Stephanie of Monaco, Martin Circus, Julie Pietri...

Four of her songs appear on 12 international major compilations, and on the top sites from Japan to the USA, and her singles again sold across the world adding countries like Russia and Australia to the existing list.
